The Heritage Park project reimagines a key urban site in Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong, as a cultural and material testing ground where history, community, and innovation converge. Rooted in the area鈥檚 distinctive urban fabric鈥攎arked by its maritime trade legacy, mixed-use neighborhoods, and vibrant street culture鈥攖he design seeks to transform the site into a dynamic hub for collective memory, public activity, and intergenerational exchange.



Through a framework of 鈥淓veryday, Weekend, and Festival Modes,鈥� the park adapts to shifting rhythms of city life. Ordinary days emphasize informal gathering and mobility; weekends host markets, workshops, and performances; and festivals celebrate traditional practices such as the Ghost Festival or Mid-Autumn Lantern Fair. This layered programming ensures that the site is not static, but alive and responsive to seasonal and cultural cycles.



Material culture anchors the proposal. The park surfaces and structures integrate vernacular patterns, tiled floors, and modular assemblies that reference local craftsmanship. These design elements support a 鈥渃ultural material plate鈥� concept, where architectural details double as catalysts for storytelling and communal identity. Overlay strategies further coordinate circulation, density, and accessibility, ensuring the site supports both spontaneous play and large-scale gatherings.



The design also addresses pressing urban needs. By accommodating flexible event infrastructure, the project encourages economic vitality through local markets and creative industries.
