The project is located in Erquan Square, Wuxi, China鈥攁 public space famous for the sculpture of the legendary erhu musician A Bing. This proposal seeks to implant a new symbiotic spatial logic, offering both a transformed sensory experience and renewed cultural meaning for the square.



The design reimagines the site as an interactive soundscape, where memory and creativity meet. At its core stands a resonance pavilion composed of fourteen rotatable modules that engage both senses and imagination. Sound becomes the central narrative, honoring A Bing鈥檚 musical legacy while inviting public interaction, play, and performance.



Rather than a static monument, the 鈥淎 Bing鈥� sculpture serves as an auditory anchor. A subtle music playback system allows it to broadcast curated local melodies, turning the square into a living archive of sound. The pavilion鈥檚 elliptical layout enhances acoustic reflections: when panels face inward, they create an immersive echo chamber; when rotated outward, they diffuse sound evenly like an open-air theater. Fully opened, the modules extend vertically, broadcasting sound outward to activate the entire plaza.



Each module is modular and mobile, featuring a wheeled base, integrated seat and storage, flexible tambour wood panel, and retractable vertical support. Pre-set ground anchors allow for stable rotation. PVC-coated fabric provides shade and weather protection while maintaining openness. When inactive, the pavilion compacts into movable seating.



This flexibility allows for a range of public uses. In its daily form, the layout offers a peaceful spot for rest and gathering. For pop-up events, community markets, and musical performances, the modules can be reoriented to shape immersive sound and space. During larger cultural celebrations, the units adapt to serve as seating or staging elements.



The 鈥淎 Bing鈥� Resonance Pavilion is an acoustic instrument, social platform, and cultural beacon鈥攅ncouraging participation, celebrating heritage, and linking past and future through sound and space.
