The lighting design concept for Il Borgo di Farfa aims to respectfully enhance the historic medieval village鈥檚 nighttime identity. Located near Rome, the site is renowned for its religious significance, rich history, and authentic architecture. The design intention is to create an emotional nocturnal journey, highlighting the site's materiality, sacred landmarks, and natural elements while maintaining the spirit and intimacy of the place.



The project鈥檚 lighting narrative is structured around three symbolic principles: Warmth, Purity, and Security. "Warmth" welcomes visitors at the entrance and residential areas with inviting golden hues. "Purity" emphasizes spiritual landmarks, like the church fa莽ade, with diffuse, pure white light that enhances architectural details without overwhelming them. "Security" is expressed through subtle lighting gradients on the bell tower and defensive structures, referencing the historic watchfulness of the site.



A delicate color temperature transition is used throughout the village, moving from warm amber tones in communal areas to cooler whites around sacred spaces. This creates a visual and emotional guide through the Borgo, reflecting the transition from daily life to spirituality.



Lighting interventions are minimal and highly targeted, respecting the village's sensitive materials such as stone walls, terracotta rooftops, and ancient trees. Pathways are softly lit to maintain a safe yet atmospheric environment, while key trees and landscape features are discreetly illuminated to create dramatic verticality and maintain the site's natural beauty.



Sustainability and historical preservation are at the core of the design. Low-intensity, energy-efficient LED technology and precise beam control are employed to reduce energy consumption and avoid light pollution, ensuring the sky remains visible and the Borgo retains its timeless charm after dark.



Overall, the project seeks to balance functionality with emotional storytelling, allowing visitors to experience Il Borgo di Farfa in a new, poetic light, while safeguarding its historic and spiritual essence for future generations.
